Welcome to this week's Year One Blog
What we have been learning this week:
This week in literacy the children have completed their independent write on an adapted version of their 'I want my hat back' story. They have published this by creating their own book to take home.
This week in Maths we have continued with subtraction including numbers to 20 and we have counted back on a number line. We have also used fact families to represent our addition and subtraction facts.
We are encouraging the children to use Doodle Maths at home to improve their maths fluency. If you do not know your child's login, please ask your class teacher.
In History this week we have plotted the events of the Gunpowder Plot on a timeline using their chronological order.
In Science this week we have investigated our 5 senses using practical resources and recorded this in our books.
In Art this week we have used our graphite pencils to learn 3 different techniques: shading, cross-hatching and smudging.

Welcome to Year Two
What we are learning next week
In Maths next week we will be comparing numbers to 100 using 'greater than', 'less than' and 'equal to'. We will also be reading and writing numbers in words and focusing on number bonds. You can read the knowledge organiser here.
In our literacy lessons next week we will be reading 'House Held Up By Trees'. We will learn how to write commas in a list and introduce adverbs to describe the tree and setting in the story. You can read the knowledge organiser here.
In computer science next week the children will retrieve their work from last week and continue to write about their favourite hobby. You can read the knowledge organiser here.
In geography next week the children will be using their knowledge so far about maps to walk around the school and locate some hidden letters. You can read the knowledge organiser here.

Welcome to Year Two
What we are learning next week
In Maths next week we will continue to subtract two digit numbers using dienes and a number line. We will also be using our knowledge of number bonds to 10 to help us find the correct answer. You can read the knowledge organiser here.
In our literacy lessons next week we will be writing a short campaign to prevent water pollution. You can read the knowledge organiser here.
In computer science next week the children will continue to use a laptop to write about their favourite hobby. You can read the knowledge organiser here.
In geography next week the children will be walking around Upton to spot local landmarks. We will then plot these landmarks onto a map. You can read the knowledge organiser here.

Welcome to this week's Year One Blog
What we have been learning this week:
This week in literacy the children have continued to look at 'I want my hat back' and wrote a letter to the rabbit from the story. We also designed our own characters in preparation for their retelling of their adapted story.
This week in Maths we have begun subtraction. We have used tens frames and counters and moved onto pictorial representations. This has involved using the crossing out method.
We are encouraging the children to use Doodle Maths at home to improve their maths fluency. If you do not know your child's login, please ask your class teacher.
In History this week we found out more information about the Gunpowder plot and have answered questions.
In Science this week we have used our senses to go on a hunt around the school to identify what we can find using these.
In Art this week we have used charcoal to create lines and patterns. We have also created a gradient.

In Maths, we are going to subtract using a number line and also learning fact families.
In Literacy, we are going to complete our independent write to showcase all that we have learnt about the story.
In History, the children will be creating a timeline of the events of the Gunpowder Plot.

This week, the Year Two children have been learning to be 'Brilliant Chefs'. They have been learning and practising techniques to prepare food, including peeling, grating, spreading and different methods of cutting safely.
They have also been tasting different ingredients and thinking about which food group they belong to.
Next week they will be designing a sandwich which they will then go on to make in the following week.

This week in literacy the children have been introduced to their story 'I want my hat back'. We have created our own questions to find out more about the different characters in the text. We have also practised using these questions in speech and thought bubbles for the different characters.
This week in Maths we have been continuing with addition using tens fames and counters. We have also used a number line to add our numbers within 10 by counting forwards. We have also recapped our number bonds to 10.
We are encouraging the children to use Doodle Maths at home to improve their maths fluency. If you do not know your child's login, please ask your class teacher.
In History this week we started looking at the Gunpowder plot and the chronology of other historical events over time. The children then created their own timelines using these events.
In Science this week we have learnt the different parts of the human body. We have labelled these using our key vocabulary.
In Art this week we have been introduced to graphite pencil and have experimented with this material to create different patterns and a gradient. The children have also learnt about Leonardo Da Vinci.
What we are learning next week
In Maths, we are going to begin subtraction using concrete manipulatives. This will include using tens frames and counters and also pictorial representations using the crossing out method.
In Literacy, we are going to continue with 'I want my hat back'. We are going to write a letter to the Bear in the story and are beginning to adapt the story to retell their own version.
In History, the children will be learning about the key events in the Gunpowder Plot and asking and answering questions about this.
In Art, the children will be using charcoal to create different lines and patterns.
In Science, the children will be exploring their senses and will go on a sense treasure hunt around the school.

We will be introducing spelling checks this week. Children will receive either a Set A or Set B spelling list. Set A is a list of spellings for children who are currently doing Read, Write Inc and Set B is for children who do Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling lessons. These lists will be slipped into the red spelling books and sent home every Friday. The children will be tested on the words the following week, on a Friday morning.

Welcome to Year Two
We hope you had a lovely half term break!
What we are learning next week
In Maths we will be finding 10 more and 10 less of a number to 100 and we will be learning how to add and subtract two 2-digit numbers. You can read the knowledge organiser here.
In our literacy lessons next week we will be reading the book 'We are Water Protectors'. At the start of the week we will be writing a list poem about water, rivers and waves. We will then write a fact file about water pollution and teach the reader how to protect rivers. You can read the knowledge organiser here.
In computer science next week we will be identifying the correct keys on a keyboard. You can read the knowledge organiser here.
In geography next week we will be learning the difference between a city, town and village. We will also be looking at the human and physical features in Upton. You can read the knowledge organiser here.
In our design and technology lessons we are going to be brilliant chefs and discuss the skills we would need to design and make an appealing menu e.g. chopping, grating, peeling and presentation. What we have been learning this week:
This week in literacy the children have watched 'A Cloudy Lesson' and have made their very own bubble blowers. The children have learnt that we use imperative verbs in instructions and we have practised using these in our own. The children have written their own instructions of how to make a cloud blower using imperative verbs.
This week in Maths we have been learning our number bonds to 10 and have learnt how to do this systematically. We have also displayed our different ways of representing our addition using our tens frames and part-part whole models.
We are encouraging the children to use Doodle Maths at home to improve their maths fluency. If you do not know your child's login, please ask your class teacher.
In Geography this week we have created our very own maps of our classrooms using the key features of a map which we have learnt. In DT we have evaluated our fruit salads and have considered what we would like to include if we were to make a fruit salad again.
What we are learning after the half term:
In Maths, we are going to continue with addition using tens frames and number lines to count on before moving onto subtraction.
In Literacy, we are going to read our new book 'I want my hat back'. The children are going to continue to write questions using the story and make predictions.
In Guided Reading, we are going to be using our book 'I want my hat back' to answer comprehension questions on what the children have read.
In History, the children will be introduced to the Gunpowder Plot and will learn about when this took place and how life in this time differs from today.
In Art, the children will be introduced to graphite pencils and charcoal to create line drawings. The children will explore how to use these materials to create different patterns.
In Science, the children will begin their 'Humans' topic and will be labelling the different parts of the human body.

This week in Maths we have been learning how to use the add symbol and have used our part-part whole models to help us to complete our addition. We have also been using fact families to represent addition.
We are encouraging the children to use Doodle Maths at home to improve their maths fluency. If you do not know your child's login, please ask your class teacher.
In Geography this week we have been constructing our own map of the classroom. In DT we have been designing our own fruit salad. Feel free to practise any chopping skills as the children will be making their own fruit salad next week.
