Welcome to Year Two
What we are learning next week
In our literacy lessons the children will be writing a diary using past tense.
In maths we will be consolidating all of our learning so far in Year Two. We will be focusing on addition, subtraction, division and multiplication.
In Science we will be learning about how plants reproduce. We will be looking at the life cycle of a sunflower and an oak tree. We will also use secondary sources to research about plants.
In Art we will be designing clay sculpture.
In History we will be comparing the similarities and differences between hospitals in the 1800s and hospitals now.
What we will be learning next week:
In Literacy, the children will adapting the story of 'Lost and Found' by creating their own characters for the story and retelling it.
In Maths, the children will be introduced to Fractions. They will be finding half of a shape and they will be finding half of a quantity using objects to help them.
In Science, the children will be learning about what animals eat and using the terms herbivore, omnivore and carnivore.
In Geography, the children will be comparing the weather conditions in the UK and Antarctica.

Welcome to Year Two
What we are learning next week
In literacy we will be planning and writing a letter explaining why we believe lights should be left on. We will continue to read 'The Dark by Lemony Snicket'.
In maths next week we will learn how to measure mass in kg and g and capacity in litres and ml. We will compare different containers and objects.
In science the children will learn that plants need light, warmth, water and soil in order to grow. We will look at healthy and unhealthy plants and give reasons to why they are healthy or unhealthy.
In history we will be ordering the key events of Mary Seacole's life on a time line.
In art the children will use clay to make simple joins.
What we will be learning next week:
In Literacy, the children will introduced to the story 'Lost and Found' by Oliver Jeffers. They will be describing the penguin and writing a dictated sentence about the story.
In Maths, the children will be continuing with their work on Multiplication. The children will be making equal groups and drawing arrays to show their multiplication facts.
In Science, the children will be learning about the 5 types of animal and categorising different animals based on their characteristics.
In DT, the children will be making a paper loom to practise using the weaving techniques that they will use to make their own placemat by the end of the term.
In Geography, the children will be learning about the capital city of London and locating it on a map. They will then learn about rural and urban areas and comparing London and Upton.

Welcome to Year Two
What we are learning next week
In literacy we will be retelling the story of 'The Dark' in first person.
In maths next week we will telling the time in quarter hour intervals and 5 minutes. The children will also learn how to solve time word problems.
In science the children will learn about germination. They will learn about what is needed for a plant to grow.
In history we will be asking and answering questions about Mary Seacole. The children will research the answers using secondary sources.
In art the children will manipulate different materials e.g. playdoh and straws and make a model of themselves.

In literacy we will continue to write our adapted story based on 'The Bear and the Piano'.
In maths next week we will complete a multiplications facts quiz. We will focus on the 2, 5 and 10 x multiplication facts. Please practice with your child to improve their fluency.
In Computer Science we will continue to use Purple Mash to learn how to code.
In geography we will be discussing different ways to slow down climate change.
In Design and Technology the children will be making and evaluating their stitched pocket.

This week the children will be undergoing their Spring Assessments for Reading, Writing and Maths.
In Literacy, the children will also be describing their new Beast using adjectives within a sentence.
In Science, the children will be learning about the features of each season and the difference in day length between them.
In Art, the children will be practising drawing their nose and hair. They will add shading and cross hatching to these.
In History, the children will be creating their own family tree.

Welcome to Year Two
What we are learning next week
In literacy we will plan and write a story based on 'The Bear and the Piano'.
In maths next week we will be using different equipment to measure e.g. trundle wheel, tape measure and ruler. We will also practice x2, x5 and x10 times table facts.
In Computer Science we will continue to use Purple Mash to learn how to code.
In geography we will be learning about climate change. We will learn about global warming and the effects it is having on our planet.
In Design and Technology the children will be creating their own stitched pocket.

What we are learning next week
In literacy we will be reading 'The Bear and the Piano' and learning how to use apostrophes for contractions.
In maths next week we will be measuring the length of objects in centimetres and metres. We will also be learning how to estimate length and make comparisons.
In Computer Science we will be learning how to change the properties of an object using a sequenced code.
In geography we will be researching the human and physical features of 4 countries in Europe.
In Design and Technology the children will be designing their stitched pocket.

What we will be learning next week:
In Literacy, the children will hunt for clues to find out what happened to Beegu and segment to spell words to be used in their writing this week. They will write a newspaper report to recall what has happened using their descriptions of Beegu.
In Maths, the children will be introduced to mass. They will compare mass using 'heavier' and 'lighter' and they will measure mass using cubes and a pan balance.
In Science, the children will be exploring their 5 senses and learning the associated body part that goes with each. They will be investigating the 5 senses.
In Art, the children will be practising different drawing techniques including cross-hatching, smudging and shading.
On Thursday it will be World Book Day. The theme for Year One is Winnie the Witch. Please send your child into school wearing an appropriate magical costume.
