  • Year Two Blog 5th November

    Fri 05 Nov 2021

Welcome to this week's Year Two blog.

Happy Bonfire Night! If you are watching any fireworks tonight, remember the Fireworks Code!

What we have been doing this week

This week in our writing lessons, the children have started looking at the story of The Bear and the Piano. You can see our old friend, Mr Antell, reading it here. The children have written a letter to the bear to help him decide whether or not he should leave his friends in the forest to go to the big city! They have been learning about contractions (such as isn't, we'll, don't etc.) and writing using conjunctions. The children have also been learning about homophones (words that sound the same but are spelled differently, such as hair and hare).

In maths, the children have been using Dienes cubes to add and subtract two 2-digit numbers. Take a look at the anchor charts in the photos below to see more, and please take a look at our Knowledge and Skills Organiser to see our teaching approaches.

We have completed our art topic, focusing on observational drawing and shading. Take a look at the Knowledge and Skills Organiser to see what your child has been learning in this topic. They completed their topic by doing some fabulous still life sketches. You can see some of these in the photos below.

What we are learning next week

Next week in literacy, the children will be writing their own story of The Bear and The Piano. They will looking at the use of different sentence types, particularly exclamation sentences (What a beautiful day! How amazing this car is !  What a tricky question this is! What an evil witch she was!).

In maths, we will be using the column method to add and subtract, linking to our work using Dienes cubes this week, as shown in our Knowledge and Skills Organiser.

We will be starting a new history topic, looking at the history of our school. Please see the Knowledge and Skills Organiser to find out more. Also, if you went to Upton Infant School yourself and have any memories, please add them to our Facebook thread.

Please see next week's spellings below. Set A are common exception words (known as 'tricky words'). Set B are near homophones, which children be learning about in their phonics sessions.

Happy Friday! And time for a well earned break...

What we have been doing this week

The children have had a busy time this week. We have completed our literacy work on writing information texts about castles. The children finished this by showing off their writing skills in our 'Superhero Write', where they wrote a recount of their castle fun day.

In maths we have been carrying out assessments and continuing to work on addition strategies, adding two 2-digit numbers.

We have begun to be 'brilliant artists' this week. The children have been practicing sketching techniques which they will continue after half term.

What we are learning after the half term break

Next week in literacy, we will be reading the story of 'Bear and the Piano'. The children will be using this as inspiration for their writing, and we will be developing their skills of writing using conjunction and introducing contracted forms of words.

In maths, we will be building on our addition and subtraction work, by using Base Ten (Dienes) equipment to add and subtract 2-digit numbers.

We will continue our art topic, practicing different drawing skills to produce our own life drawings.

Welcome to this week's Year Two blog.

What we have been doing this week

This week, castles have been the context of the children's writing. We have been focusing on different sentence types (statements, commands, questions and exclamations) and learning about noun phrases.

In maths, the children have been consolidating their learning on numbers bonds (pairs of numbers that make another number) and the associated addition and subtraction fact families.

For the past few weeks the children have been brilliant scientists, learning about how to keep healthy. We completed our science learning this week, making healthy flapjacks with foods with the main different food groups.

What we are learning next week

Next week we will continue looking at non-fiction texts in our literacy lessons, learning through the context of castles. The children will be learning about using conjunctions, such as 'and' and 'because' to extend their sentences.

In maths, we will begin several weeks of learning on addition and subtraction. The children will using a variety of equipment and pictorial methods to initially add and subtract tens and ones from 2-digit numbers.

    Sun 26 Sep 2021

Welcome to this week's Year Two blog.

What we have been doing this week

This week, the children have completed writing about Beegu, the little alien, writing their own stories about her landing in Upton.

In maths, the children have continued to learn about place value, thinking about the different ways that 2-digit numbers can be partitioned into groups of tens and ones. They have also been comparing and ordering numbers, using the greater than and less than symbols.

In science, the children have carried out investigations into how germs spread and the most effective ways to clean hands.

What we are learning next week

Next week we will be looking at non-fiction texts in our literacy lessons, learning through the context of castles.

In maths, we will be focusing on number bonds - pairs of numbers that add together to make another number. We will use the part-whole model to help with this, and look at fact families (the 2 addition and 2 subtraction calculations in the same family, e.g. 3+4=7 / 4+3 = 7 / 7-4=3 / 7-3 =4).

    Wow Work

Take a look at some of the pictures below where you will see some if the fantastic learning the children have been doing this week. This week, Woodpeckers have stormed the Doodle maths chart which means they have earned extra play time again! Well done Woodpeckers!

    Fri 17 Sep 2021

Welcome to this week's Year Two blog.

What we have been doing this week

There was some excitement in Year Two this week when a flying saucer crash landed in the playground. It turns out that a friendly little alien called Beegu had got lost. The children read a story all about her and have begun to retell the story.

In maths, children have been learning about the value of 2-digit numbers, representing them and partitioning them in different ways. You can see some of the ways they have been doing this in the 'anchor chart' in the photos below.

The children have also started tom learn about what we need to stay healthy. They considered what three things they would need to take with them to survive on another planet - although most of them wanted to take ipads, teddies and sweets, hopefully they now appreciate that they would need air, water and food!

What we are learning next week

Next week we will be continuing to write about the friendly little alien, Beegu. The children will be retelling their own Beegu stories, with a particular focus on the correct use of capital letters and full stops.

In maths, we will continue our work on 2-digit numbers. We will be exploring how to compare and order 2-digit numbers and practising to read and write numbers in numerals and words.

    Wow Work

Take a look at some of the pictures below where you will see some if the fantastic learning the children have been doing this week. This week, Woodpeckers have topped the Doodle maths chart which means they have earned extra play time. Well done Woodpeckers!

  • Year Two's Weekly Blog

    Fri 10 Sep 2021

Welcome to this week's Year Two blog.

Our weekly blog aims to keep you informed about what your child has been learning at school and what we will be doing next week. This may help you to support your child at home with their learning.

What we have been doing this week

What a fantastic start to the year! We are so pleased with how the children have settled in to their new classes. One of things you may have heard about is 'brilliant walking'. If not, ask your child to tell you all about it!

The children have had a busy week getting to know each other and their new classrooms. We have had a focus on teamwork and the children have been carrying out teamwork activities such as building spaghetti and marshmallow towers. We have also had an exciting time hunting for the missing class mascots and making wanted posters.

What we are learning next week

Next week we will begin to be 'brilliant scientists'. The children will learning about what humans need to survive and keep healthy.

In writing, we will be learning to retell a story through actions and story maps and begin to write it later in the week.

In maths we will be exploring place value - the value of each digit in a 2-digit number, and looking at different ways to represent these.

    Wow Work

Next week we will begin to count the weekly class reads and Doodle maths stars. The top class each week will earn extra play time!

Take a look at the photos below to see some of the super writing that the children have been doing so far this week.

    Have a lovely weekend!

  • Upton's Got Talent

    Thu 22 Jul 2021

Well done to those children who showed off their BRILLIANT talents on Thursday. We were amazed by singers, dancers, comedians, magicians, musicians, quiz show hosts and lots more. You were AMAZING!!

  • Water fun day!

    Wed 21 Jul 2021

What better way to cool down on a hot, sunny day?  The children had great fun today on the annual water fun day, and judging from some of the dishevelled staff squelching through the school, they enjoyed it too!

Take a look at the photos to see for yourself!
