Welcome to this week's Year One Blog
What we have been learning this week
This week has been extremely exciting but a little bit different for the children. They have spent time with their new class and teacher for September. The children have played 'get to know us' games, familiarised themselves with their new classroom and they have been introduced to some stories that we will be focusing on in September. It has been lovely to see their excited smiles and they have definitely proven to us that they are Year 2 ready!
This week in literacy we have learnt about similes as we have described the setting in our story 'Little Red'. In maths we learnt about time and we are now able to tell the time to the hour.
Brilliant Scientists
This week we have learnt about animals and what they eat. We have learnt how to group animals into omnivores, herbivores and carnivores.
We have also been practising for our Sports Day on Friday 15th July.
What we are learning next week
On Monday and Tuesday we are going to be in our Year 2 classrooms.
On Wednesday, Thursday and Friday we will be back in Year 1. In literacy we are going to continue to learn about similes and write a setting description about the forest. In maths we are going to learn to tell the time to half past. We will also continue practising for Sports Day and Upton's Got Talent!
The Frogs have an extra play this week for their amazing efforts collecting Doodle Maths Stars, Well done Frogs!

Welcome to Year Two's blog
Well, as we write our weekly blog, our Year Two children (or those who are going there!) are having a lovely time at the Junior School. The children seem very settled and are really getting to know their new school. We hope by the time we see them again on Wednesday, they will be raring to start Year Three, but not forgetting they still have a busy week and a bit left with us!
What we have been doing this week
As you can imagine, it's been a bit of a topsy-turvy week! Besides transition, we have squeezed in a little bit of literacy and science too. We also had a day of DT where the children made their 'Wacky Races' vehicles.
What we are learning next week
Next week, the children will be spending Monday and Tuesday at the Junior School. On Wednesday and Thursday we will be spending some time preparing for our Graduation ceremony, as well as Upton's Got Talent and completing our science, DT and history learning.
Wow Work
Please take a look at the photos below to see the children completing their DT models. Also, there are some photos of some super writing and history work.

It was lovely to welcome everyone to our Summer Fayre this afternoon. The PSFA have worked very hard to organise a fabulous fayre which was enjoyed by all!
Welcome to Year Two's blog
Welcome to our blog! The children are having a fun animal themed day today at school, including creating creatures out of junk modelling.
This is what we have been up to this week...
What we have been doing this week
In maths we carried out problem solving, focusing on multiplication and division. The children will had to apply their understanding to solve these fun and challenging maths problems.
In literacy we continued to use prepositions in our writing, which tell us where something is or when it happened. We wrote a log book, postcards and developing ideas for our final writing piece.
In science we carried out an investigation to find out what was the favourite habitat of woodlice. The children collected woodlice and set up a 'woodlouse hotel'. The woodlice could then choose which microhabitat they wanted to go into. We will find out soon what they chose! You can read the knowledge organiser here.
In history, the children created a fact file to showcase all that they have learned so far about Mary Seacole. You can read the knowledge organiser here.
In DT, we learned techniques to join wood, creating strong joints. We drew on our knowledge so far to design vehicles ready for our 'Wacky Races'. The children are now read to create their own vehicles next week! You can read the knowledge organiser here.
What we are learning next week
Next week, the children will be spending Thursday and Friday at Upton Junior school for transition activities. But we will be cramming lots of fun into Monday, Tuesday and Thursday!
We have a bit of different week of activities next week.
Each class will be having a DT day where they create their vehicles. They will be following their plans, applying their skills of sawing, joining and measuring to create a chassis for their vehicle. They will then create bodies to attach to the chassis.
In literacy next week, we will be describing our own fantasy settings. We will use these settings to write our own stories based on Ocean Meets Sky.
In science we will be completing our investigations to find out what is the favourite habitat of a woodlouse. You can read the knowledge organiser here.
Next week in history we are learning about hospitals from the 1800s. We will be looking at how they have changed over time. You can read the knowledge organiser here.
There will be no new spelling to learn next week.

Welcome to Year Two's blog
As we approach July, there are numerous events coming up over the coming weeks. Your child should have come home with a little timetable of the key events for the remainder of the term. Please see your class teacher if you have any queries, particularly if you would like to help on our trip to Upton Country Park.
What we have been doing this week
In maths we carried out problem solving investigations each day, involving addition and subtraction. Children had to apply their understanding to solve maths problems.
Mystery parcels arrived in the Year Two classrooms this week! The children had to work out where they have come from and who they belonged to which inspired their writing for the week. They used expanded noun phrases and a brilliant range of punctuation to write character descriptions and diaries.
In science we investigated the micro habitats around school. We looked for minibeasts such as woodlice, spiders, worms and beetles. You can read the knowledge organiser here.
In history, the children learned about the key events in Mary Seacole's life and plotted them on a timeline. You can read the knowledge organiser here.
We also had a Spring clean afternoon. Children helped with weeding, tidying and collecting up leaves.
What we are learning next week
In maths we will be carrying out more problem solving investigations each day, focusing on multiplication and division. These will be fun puzzles in which children will have to apply their understanding to solve maths problems.
In literacy next week, we will be continuing to use prepositions in our writing. These tell us where something is or when it happened. We will be writing a log book, postcards and developing ideas for our final writing piece.
In science we will be planning an investigation to find out what the favourite habitat of a woodlouse is. You can read the knowledge organiser here.
Next week in history, the children will be creating a fact file to showcase all that they have learned so far about Mary Seacole. You can read the knowledge organiser here.
In DT, we will be drawing on our knowledge so far and designing vehicle ready for our 'Wacky Races'. Each child will need to bring a box to make their vehicle out of. You can read the knowledge organiser here.

On Wednesday this week our Brilliant Reception children went on their first school trip - and the teachers' first school trip since before the pandemic.
It was a wonderful day and the children had fun answering questions on a Jubilee trail, searching for minibeasts, making and testing dens and going on a scavenger hunt.
Thank you to Marco and Bex the fantastic Rangers at Avon Heath who looked after us for the day and to our brilliant coach drivers who managed to get us there and back to school (despite roads being closed by the police). Thank you to the wonderful parents and grandparents who came along as trip helpers - without you, this fun-filled day would not have been possible, and finally to the children who were absolute superstars all (the very hot) day long.
Welcome to Year Two's blog
Summer has finally arrived! It's certainly a warm one. It's good to see that most children are coming to school in a hat and wearing sun screen. Excitingly, the 'Maths Wizard' came to school today. She will be visiting every Friday. Your child will be coming home with a 'time tables' card and when they feel they know their multiplication facts, they can ask to visit the Maths Wizard who will check how fantastic they are and move them on to a new challenge.
What we have been doing this week
In maths this week, we have revisited measuring length. The children helped Puff the Magic Dragon the make a 'Little Jackie Paper' friend using their careful measuring, which they will bring home today.
In literacy, the children read 'Into the Forest', sequencing the story, and retelling it in their own words.
In science we looked at what living things need to survive, such as water, food and shelter. You can read the knowledge organiser here.
In DT, we learned how to use a saw and bench hook correctly, and practiced cutting pieces of wood. We also learned different ways to create axels and wheels. You can read the knowledge organiser here.
In history we began looking at primary and secondary sources of information to answer our questions about Mary Seacole. You can read the knowledge organiser here.
