• Bournemouth Echo School Awards

  The first Bournemouth Echo School's Awards took place last night. A variety of categories recognised the achievements of people from school communities across Dorset. Mr Helm was delighted to have been nominated by a number of parents in the leadership category.

   

  At the glittering award ceremony, Mr Helm was very pleased to receive the award for school leadership.

• Tag Rugby

  The tag rugby squad had another hugely successful session at the Yarrells School. Training matches were played, with Upton B team mixing with Yarrells B to make a fairer contest, and both teams showed great progress from their first session. In the A team match there were tries galore, with the children learning more about movement and passing. The match ended in a keenly contested draw. Thanks to all the parents who came to show their support. 

  

• World Book Day

  A super World Book Day at Upton Infant School. Well done everyone for such fantastic outfits.

  

• Keep Upton Tidy

  We were joined yesterday by Councillor Fred Drane and representatives of the Keep Upton Tidy group who presented the school with a cheque for £300 in response to the work the school does in supporting the development of the local community.  The money will be spent on purchasing new recycling bins for each of the classrooms.

  

• Tag Rugby Superstars

  Twelve Year Two children joined the Yarrells School for a tag rugby training session and matches at Upton Rec. Considering many of Upton's players had very little tag rugby experience, they acquitted themselves extremely well. There were some notable high points, including some glorious tries and some resolute and at times robust defending! The next session will be on March 15th - for our children it can't come soon enough.

  

• A Sparkly Start to term

  The school was a hive of activity today as each year group kick started their new topics.

   

  Unfortunately, Reception's topic didn't quite get off to the start they were hoping for. Mr Williams had burnt his toast, triggering the fire alarm. Mr Helm noticed that the school trophies had all been taken and a thief was spotted running off with a bag of loot. Meanwhile, Mr Mace fell off the ladder whilst cleaning a window. Thankfully there were some genuine super heroes at hand to help out, and it led the children to think about other people who help us, which is what their new topic is all about.

   

  In Year One, the children's day started with an aeroplane trip to Kenya where they met African drummer Noah. The children thoroughly enjoyed joining in the drumming themselves. They also found out lots of facts about Africa and created some super chalk drawings of Kenyan wildlife.

   

  And as if the sound of African drums wasn't enough, Year Two started their Indian topic by inviting Punjabi drummer Vijay in to school to teach them some incredible dance moves. They also enjoyed tasting Indian food and creating Diwali Diyas, which are small clay pots filled with oil, lit during the Hindu festival of Diwali.

   

  What a super start to the new half term we have had.

  

• A Fabulous Finish

  As we came to the end of the half term, all year groups celebrated the pupils' achievements with fab finishes and open afternoons.

   

  The Reception children held a dinosaur fashion parade, where the children spent the afternoon producing some incredible dinosaur costumes out of junk, and then paraded them down the catwalk.

   

  In Year One, the children put into practice the skills they had been developing throughout the topic. Some children decided to use their DT skills to plan and make healthy pizzas, whereas other children used their new found drawing skills to create some woodland art. Other children produced Julia Donaldson inspired computer animation.

   

  The Year Two pupils ended their Roald Dahl topic by making some 'marvellous medicine' with some weird and wonderful ingredients.

   

  Children across all year groups had also been busy creating some fantastic creations in their home learning.

• Britain in Bloom - Excellence Award

  Last night Mr Helm and two pupils attended the Upton in Bloom Presentation Evening.  The girls read their award winning poems about Butterflies and Bees to much applause. The school was presented with a Certificate of Excellence by the southern section of the Britain in Bloom competition for its community involvement and enthusiastic support of local events. 

  

• UIS Football

  Two Upton teams made the short trip to Lytchett Matravers Primary for two keenly awaited rematches. In the first game, Upton "Rovers" stayed ahead throughout, up until the final few seconds, when a last gasp goal drew the score at 3-3. In the second game, the "Wanderers" fought hard but were overcome by a strong Lytchett B team. All children worked hard in their positions and the progress made by both teams since the Pyramid Shield Tournament was evident. Thanks go to head coach Mr (Van Gaal) Antell and his assistant Ms Jenkins for the sterling work they put in every Monday after school.

  

• The Upton Pancake Race

  It has become a firm favourite in the Upton Infant School calendar - the Great Upton Pancake Race!

   

  This morning the whole school gathered on the playground to watch representatives from each year group battle it out to win the coveted Pancake Race Trophy.

   

  The brave contenders raced over assorted obstacles, all the while tossing their pancakes. The race ended with each racer eating their pancake - this proved quite difficult!
