  • Year One Blog Week 7

    Fri 21 Oct 2022

Welcome to this week's Year One Blog

What we have been learning this week:

This week in literacy the children have watched 'A Cloudy Lesson' and have made their very own bubble blowers. The children have learnt that we use imperative verbs in instructions and we have practised using these in our own. The children have written their own instructions of how to make a cloud blower using imperative verbs.

This week in Maths we have been learning our number bonds to 10 and have learnt how to do this systematically. We have also displayed our different ways of representing our addition using our tens frames and part-part whole models.

We are encouraging the children to use Doodle Maths at home to improve their maths fluency. If you do not know your child's login, please ask your class teacher.

In Geography this week we have created our very own maps of our classrooms using the key features of a map which we have learnt. In DT we have evaluated our fruit salads and have considered what we would like to include if we were to make a fruit salad again.

What we are learning after the half term:

In Maths, we are going to continue with addition using tens frames and number lines to count on before moving onto subtraction.

In Literacy, we are going to read our new book 'I want my hat back'. The children are going to continue to write questions using the story and make predictions.

In Guided Reading, we are going to be using our book 'I want my hat back' to answer comprehension questions on what the children have read.

In History, the children will be introduced to the Gunpowder Plot and will learn about when this took place and how life in this time differs from today.

In Art, the children will be introduced to graphite pencils and charcoal to create line drawings. The children will explore how to use these materials to create different patterns.

In Science, the children will begin their 'Humans' topic and will be labelling the different parts of the human body.

We hope you all have a wonderful half term and we look forward to seeing you when we are back.

  • Year One Blog Week 5

    Thu 06 Oct 2022

Welcome to this week's Year One Blog

What we have been learning this week

This week has been very exciting for the children in Year One. We have been lucky enough to have athletes come to visit our school and we completed our very own athletic course.

Now that the children are all settled in, here is some information about reading which may be useful:

    • Library days are on a Monday (Ducks), Tuesday (Frogs) and a Wednesday (Otters). Please bring back your child's love to read book on these days so they can swap them for a new one. If you do not bring back your old one we cannot give out a new one until this one is returned.
    • Read, Write, Inc books are handed back on a Wednesday and the children will take home a new one. Homework also needs to be returned on this day and you will receive your new homework sheet.
    • Unfortunately, in Year One we do not do updates on Tapestry. However, we still love to hear about your children's achievements and your child can take in any certificates or trophies to share in Assembly on a Friday.
    • When children are read with during Read, Write, Inc this reading is not recorded in their diary. However, from next week any teacher or TA reads during guided reading will be recorded in their diary.
    • Every Friday we do a reading raffle and if children have at least 3 reads from that week they have the chance for them to win a prize. One child per class will be selected at random.

This week in Literacy we have been continuing with our 'Astro Girl' book and we have been finding out a variety of facts about Space. We have then used these facts to create our very own fact files to showcase all of our new learning.

This week in Maths we have been learning about how to use a number line and place numbers within 10 on this. We have also introduced them to addition by looking at part-part whole models.

We are encouraging the children to use Doodle Maths at home to improve their maths fluency. If you do not know your child's login, please ask your class teacher.

What we are learning next week

In Maths, we are continuing with addition and using the add symbol. We are also going to be introduced to fact families.

In Literacy, we are going to be writing a letter to Astrid using all that we have learnt so far.

In Guided Reading, we are going to be making predictions based on the book 'How to Catch a Star' by Oliver Jeffers.

  • Sports For Schools Visit

    Thu 06 Oct 2022

This morning, Luke and Leon from Sports For Schools have been putting the children through their paces as they take part in sponsored circuits to raise money for sports equipment.

The children are thoroughly enjoying themselves, keeping fit and raising money at the same time.
