Welcome to this week's Year One Blog

What we have been learning this week

This week in literacy, we have written a newspaper report about a missing dragon!

In maths we have continued to represent and compare numbers to 100. The children are now able to order numbers to 100 from the smallest to the largest and identify one less and one more of a number.

    Brilliant Scientists

In science this week we looked at the similarities and differences between different animals by focusing on their structure. The children drew pictures of different animals and labelled the parts of the body.

    Brilliant Chefs

The children had lots of fun this week trying different fruits so they could decide on the fruits they would like in their fruit salad.

    Brilliant Designers

The children have learnt how to weave using fabric. The children also made a loom using cardboard and wool.

What we are learning next week

In literacy we are going to read a new story called 'Little Red'. The children are going to answer comprehension questions and write a newspaper report about the big bad wolf.

In maths we are going to learn about different coins and notes. The children are going to add coins together and create their own shop.

    Brilliant Scientists

In science this week the children are going to continue to group animals based on their structure. On Wednesday we will be going on our school trip to look at the different sea creatures.

    Brilliant Designers

The children will be continuing to weave using different fabrics to make a summer pattern!

  • Year Two's Blog - 24th June

    Fri 24 Jun 2022

    Welcome to Year Two's blog

As we approach July, there are numerous events coming up over the coming weeks. Your child should have come home with a little timetable of the key events for the remainder of the term. Please see your class teacher if you have any queries, particularly if you would like to help on our trip to Upton Country Park.

What we have been doing this week

In maths we carried out problem solving investigations each day, involving addition and subtraction. Children had to apply their understanding to solve maths problems.

Mystery parcels arrived in the Year Two classrooms this week! The children had to work out where they have come from and who they belonged to which  inspired their writing for the week. They used expanded noun phrases and a brilliant range of punctuation to write character descriptions and diaries.

In science we investigated the micro habitats around school. We looked for minibeasts such as woodlice, spiders, worms and beetles. You can read the knowledge organiser here.

In history, the children learned about the key events in Mary Seacole's life and plotted them on a timeline. You can read the knowledge organiser here.

We also had a Spring clean afternoon. Children helped with weeding, tidying and collecting up leaves.

What we are learning next week

In maths we will be carrying out more problem solving investigations each day, focusing on multiplication and division. These will be fun puzzles in which children will have to apply their understanding to solve maths problems.

In literacy next week, we will be continuing to use prepositions in our writing. These tell us where something is or when it happened. We will be writing a log book, postcards and developing ideas for our final writing piece.

In science we will be planning an investigation to find out what the favourite habitat of a woodlouse is. You can read the knowledge organiser here.

Next week in history, the children will be creating a fact file to showcase all that they have learned so far about Mary Seacole. You can read the knowledge organiser here.

In DT,  we will be drawing on our knowledge so far and designing  vehicle ready for our 'Wacky Races'. Each child will need to bring a box to make their vehicle out of. You can read the knowledge organiser here.

    Here are next week's spellings:

  • Reception's visit to Avon Heath

    Fri 17 Jun 2022

On Wednesday this week our Brilliant Reception children went on their first school trip - and the teachers' first school trip since before the pandemic.

It was a wonderful day and the children had fun answering questions on a Jubilee trail, searching for minibeasts, making and testing dens and going on a scavenger hunt.

Thank you to Marco and Bex the fantastic Rangers at Avon Heath who looked after us for the day and to our brilliant coach drivers who managed to get us there and back to school (despite roads being closed by the police). Thank you to the wonderful parents and grandparents who came along as trip helpers - without you, this fun-filled day would not have been possible, and finally to the children who were absolute superstars all (the very hot) day long.

  • Year Two's Blog - 17th June

    Fri 17 Jun 2022

    Welcome to Year Two's blog

Summer has finally arrived! It's certainly a warm one. It's good to see that most children are coming to school in a hat and wearing sun screen. Excitingly, the 'Maths Wizard' came to school today. She will be visiting every Friday. Your child will be coming home with a 'time tables' card and when they feel they know their multiplication facts, they can ask to visit the Maths Wizard who will check how fantastic they are and move them on to a new challenge.

What we have been doing this week

In maths this week, we have revisited measuring length. The children helped Puff the Magic Dragon the make a 'Little Jackie Paper' friend using their careful measuring, which they will bring home today.

In literacy, the children read 'Into the Forest', sequencing the story, and retelling it in their own words.

In science we looked at what living things need to survive, such as water, food and shelter. You can read the knowledge organiser here.

In DT,  we learned how to use a saw and bench hook correctly, and practiced cutting pieces of wood. We also learned different ways to create axels and wheels. You can read the knowledge organiser here.

In history we began looking at primary and secondary sources of information to answer our questions about Mary Seacole. You can read the knowledge organiser here.

  • Year Two's Blog - 10th June

    Fri 10 Jun 2022

    Welcome to Year Two's blog

Welcome to the final half term! This is going to be a busy one too - we will be sending out a timetable shortly so you know what's going on when...

What we have been doing this week

This week maths we learnt about position and direction. The children were following and giving each other instructions using language such as clockwise, anticlockwise, left, right, quarter turn etc.

In literacy, the children explored the story 'Into the Forest' by Anthony Browne using drama. We imagined that we were the character from the book and wrote letters and a setting description, using all the amazing words we had generated from the drama.

In science we began learning about living things in their habitats. We will begin by looking at the differences between living and non-living things, exploring the characteristics of living things through the story of 'Mrs Gren', each letter of her name standing for one of the characteristics. You can read the knowledge organiser here.

In DT, we began to explore the component parts of a vehicle, such as the chassis, body, axels and wheels. You can read the knowledge organiser here.

In history we began learning about Mary Seacole. Mary was a Jamaican-British nurse who set up the 'British Hotel' to treat soldiers during the Crimean War. You can read the knowledge organiser here.

What we are learning next week

In maths we will be consolidating our previous learning on measuring length. The children will be helping Puff the Magic Dragon the make a 'Little Jackie Paper' friend out of paper strips using their careful measuring.

In literacy, the children will be reading 'Into the Forest' and sequencing the story, leading to them retelling it in their own words.

In science we will be looking at what living things need to survive, such as water, food and shelter. You can read the knowledge organiser here.

In DT, we will be starting to look at how to make a strong chassis by learning how to make strong corner joints. We will also learn different ways to create axels and wheels. You can read the knowledge organiser here.

Next week in history we will be looking at primary and secondary sources to answer our questions about Mary Seacole. You can read the knowledge organiser here.

    Wow Work

The Woodpeckers have topped the Doodle chart and earned some extra playtime.

But it's been a disappointing week of  reading, so the Foxes have managed to earn extra playtime with just 11 children having read the expected amount this week.
