    Sun 28 Nov 2021

Welcome to this week's Year One blog.

On Friday we sent home a letter regarding permission to film your child as part of our Christmas Performance. Just a gentle reminder to please return this by Tuesday 30th November.

What we have been doing this week

This week in literacy we have learnt and written 'Stick Man'. We have written the story using all of the skills we have learnt so far in Year One e.g. capital letters, full stops and the suffix -ed. Take a look at the 'WOW Work' at the bottom of the page, we are sure you will be just as proud as us!

In maths, we have been looking at 2D and 3D shapes and we have compared different shapes based on their properties.

This week we have been 'brilliant artists' and we have learnt 3 skills and techniques painters use: stippling, wash and block. The children used their knowledge of mixing colours and different painting techniques to create an under the sea picture.

What we are learning next week

Next week in literacy, we will be continuing to focus on the story 'Stick Man'. We are going to edit our work from last week and extend some sentences using 'and'.

In maths, we will be revisiting the learning we have learnt so far in Year One focusing on place value, addition and subtraction. Please see our 'knowledge and skills organiser'

In art next week we will be looking at Vincent Van Gogh and his famous painting 'Starry Night'.

    Wow Work

At the bottom of the page you will be able to see the fantastic work the children have produced this week. Well done Year One!

  • Year Two Blog - 26th November

    Fri 26 Nov 2021

    Welcome to Year Two's blog.

What we have been doing this week

This week in literacy, we have been reading a new story 'The River' (you can see a video of the story here). The children will be using this as inspiration for their writing, retelling the story using a variety of conjunctions.

In maths, we have been adding three 3-digit numbers and building on our knowledge of number bonds to find number bonds to 100. You can see more in our Knowledge and Skills Organiser.

In our science topic, we have started to learn about materials - how they are used for different purposes, their properties and how they can be changed. You can see the 'knowledge and skills organiser' here.

What we are learning next week

In maths, we will be looking at money. We will familiarise ourselves with the different coins and notes, and use them to make different amounts of money.

In our writing lessons, we will continue to work on the story 'The River'. The children will be planning and writing their own stories based on the river in the present tense, ensuring the use the correct  tense in their writing.

In our science lessons we will be looking at the suitability of different materials for different purposes and how materials can be changed. You can see the 'knowledge and skills organiser' here.

    Thu 18 Nov 2021

Welcome to this week's Year One blog.

What we have been doing this week

This week in literacy, the children have been writing some sentences to describe the penguin in the story 'Lost and Found'. They have written some fantastic sentences focusing on capital letters and full stops.

In maths, we have been looking at 'fact families'. Give your child a number sentence such as 4 + 3 = 7 and challenge them to write 3 more number sentences using the same numbers. They will blow you away with their maths skills! We have also made comparisons between two numbers this week and written number sentences e.g. 3 > 1, 4 =4.

This week we have been brilliant artists and we have learnt that by adding white and black paint to primary colours we can make the shade of the colour 'lighter' or 'darker'. We have also learnt that by mixing two primary colours together we can make a different colour called 'secondary colours'.

What we are learning next week

Next week in literacy, we will be starting to get into the Christmas spirit as we will be looking at the story 'Stick Man'. The children are going to learn, retell and write the story.

In maths, we will be looking at 3D and 2D shapes. We will be comparing different shapes and we will be creating patterns. Please see more information by looking at our knowledge and skills organiser

    Welcome to Year Two's blog.

Another busy week has flown by. We are sorry for the confusion over a last minute PE day change this week. Unfortunately, the ongoing difficulties due to COVID have meant we have had to change staffing at short notice which has impacted on our PE days.

Just to confirm, PE days are supposed to be Wednesday and Fridays.

What we have been doing this week

This week in literacy, the children have been writing their own stories of 'The Bear and the Piano'. They looking at using different sentence types, particularly exclamation sentences (What a beautiful day! How amazing this car is !  What a tricky question this is! What an evil witch she was!).

In maths, we began using the column method to add and subtract, linking to our work using Dienes, as shown in our Knowledge and Skills Organiser.

We began a new history topic, looking at the history of our school. The children began by exploring the school to find out about its past and looked at old artefacts from the past 120 years of Upton Infant School. You can see some of the photos below. Please see the Knowledge and Skills Organiser to find out more.

What we are learning next week

Welcome to this week's Year One blog.

What we have been doing this week

This week in our writing lessons, the children have been looking at the story 'Lost and Found'. They have been looking at verbs with different suffixes (-ing and -ed) and have done a fantastic job at writing some sentences related to the story. They have even been authors themselves and they have adapted parts of the story!

In maths, the children have been learning how to subtract using a number line and they have been finding the difference between two amounts. As always, we are continuing to work on our problem solving skills.

We have completed our science topic where we have looked at different materials and their properties. The children are now able to describe different objects and they have designed some items of clothing/props for 'The Smartest Giant in Town'.

What we are learning next week

Next week in literacy, the children will be writing a character description about the penguin in our story. They will be focusing on the penguin's appearance and personality.

In maths, we will be applying our knowledge of addition and subtraction to fact families. We will also be looking at greater than (>), less than (<) and equal to (=). Please see more information by looking at our knowledge and skills organiser

We will be starting a new art topic where we will be focusing on the artist Vincent Van Gogh and his famous paintings. The children are going to be learning about primary and secondary colours and they are going to learn different skills/techniques of how to paint.

  • Year Two hunt for clues...

    Tue 09 Nov 2021

The Year Two children have been hunting for clues about the history of the school today. Here's what they found around the school:

    • Old photographs of the school showing it in the 1950s, the 1970s and the 1980s.

    • A tree with a plaques, which was planted as a memorial to Miss Baggs, the first headteacher of the school from 1952 to 1974.

    • The spot under the old oak tree, as described in an old school log book of where to find a time capsule which was buried to commemorate the millennium in January 2000. (We are wondering whether or not to dig it up and put it back!)

    • A plaque showing when the new wing of the school was opened in 1985.

The children also looked at old photographs of the school, and looked at pages from the log books going back to 1902.

We finished with a zoom question session with Mrs Marsh, who was a teacher at the school from 1997, to find out a bit about how school has changed since then.

The children will continue to learn about the history of the school over the next two weeks.

  • Year One Blog 5th November

    Fri 05 Nov 2021

Welcome to this week's Year One blog.

    Happy Friday!

What we have been doing this week

The children have had a fantastic first week back! We have been looking at the story 'Fluff and Billy' and we have been learning all about penguins. Now that we are experts, we have created posters about what penguins like to do e.g. slashing, swimming and climbing.

In maths we have learnt how to subtract. We have applied this knowledge in lots of different ways e.g. using a tens frame. We now know that when we take away the amount gets smaller/less!

We have begun to be 'brilliant scientists' this week. The children have been learning about different materials. We are now able to name objects around the classroom and say what material it is made from and even describe its properties e.g. a window is made from glass and it is fragile. I wonder what objects you could describe that are in your home!

What we are learning next week

Next week in literacy, we will be reading the story 'Lost and Found'. The children will be using this as inspiration for their writing, and we will be developing their skills of writing using capital letters and the suffix -ed.

In maths, we will be building on our subtraction work by using a number line to count backwards. We will also be using our knowledge to solve maths problems.

Next week we will continue to be 'brilliant scientists'. We are going to be finding the best materials to make some new clothes and props for 'The Smartest Giant in Town'.

    Wow Work

Once again, we have had some fantastic learning across the curriculum. Some children who are always trying their best have been having a hot chocolate with Mr Churchill on a Friday.

This week Frogs are the winner with a whopping 145 stars, earning themselves an extra play. Well done Frogs!

Welcome to this week's Year Two blog.

Happy Bonfire Night! If you are watching any fireworks tonight, remember the Fireworks Code!

What we have been doing this week

This week in our writing lessons, the children have started looking at the story of The Bear and the Piano. You can see our old friend, Mr Antell, reading it here. The children have written a letter to the bear to help him decide whether or not he should leave his friends in the forest to go to the big city! They have been learning about contractions (such as isn't, we'll, don't etc.) and writing using conjunctions. The children have also been learning about homophones (words that sound the same but are spelled differently, such as hair and hare).

In maths, the children have been using Dienes cubes to add and subtract two 2-digit numbers. Take a look at the anchor charts in the photos below to see more, and please take a look at our Knowledge and Skills Organiser to see our teaching approaches.

We have completed our art topic, focusing on observational drawing and shading. Take a look at the Knowledge and Skills Organiser to see what your child has been learning in this topic. They completed their topic by doing some fabulous still life sketches. You can see some of these in the photos below.

What we are learning next week

Next week in literacy, the children will be writing their own story of The Bear and The Piano. They will looking at the use of different sentence types, particularly exclamation sentences (What a beautiful day! How amazing this car is !  What a tricky question this is! What an evil witch she was!).

In maths, we will be using the column method to add and subtract, linking to our work using Dienes cubes this week, as shown in our Knowledge and Skills Organiser.

We will be starting a new history topic, looking at the history of our school. Please see the Knowledge and Skills Organiser to find out more. Also, if you went to Upton Infant School yourself and have any memories, please add them to our Facebook thread.
