  • Year Two's Blog - 27th May

    Fri 27 May 2022

    Welcome to Year Two's blog

What a lovely day we have had! The children looked fantastic in their red, white and blue colours. They enjoyed a lovely picnic at 'The Rec' with our Upton Junior School friends, entertained by the Junior School's  fantastic band. Today, the children also came home with their special commemorative Jubilee book.

What we have been doing this week

In maths, we have been consolidating learning from across the whole maths curriculum and completing SATs assessments.

In literacy, the children completed their work on  'House Held Up By Trees' and wrote an estate agent's report to sell the house.

We completed our science topic on plants this week. We finished our investigation into what plants need to grow well. We discovered that plants grown in the cold or dry did not grow as well, but the ones in the dark grew much taller, although they were not a healthy green colour.  Read the science knowledge organiser here.

In geography compared the weather in India and the UK, and learned about the monsoon season. Read the geography knowledge organiser here.

In art the children completed their clay models which they will be bringing home shortly.

What we are learning next week

In maths we will be learning about position and direction. The children will follow and give instructions using language such as clockwise, anticlockwise, left, right, quarter turn etc.

In literacy, the children will be exploring ideas in our writing through drama. We will be imagining that we are the character from our new book 'Into the Forest' by Anthony Browne. We will be writing letters and a setting description, using all the amazing words generated from our drama.

In science we will begin learning about living things in their habitats. We will begin by looking at the differences between living and non-living things, exploring the characteristics of living things through the story of 'Mrs Gren'. You can read the knowledge organiser here.

In DT, we will be learning how to design, make and evaluate our own wheeled vehicles. We will begin by exploring the component parts of a vehicle, such as the chassis, body, axels and wheels. You can read the knowledge organiser here.

In history we will learn about Mary Seacole. Mary was a Jamaican-British nurse who set up the 'British Hotel' to treat soldiers during the Crimean War. You can read the knowledge organiser here.

As we have had a rather busy week which has resulted in some of our phonics lessons being cut a little short, we are carrying over our spellings for another week as we have not had time to adequately teach them.

    Next week's spellings

    Brilliant Scientists

In science this week we have learnt about deciduous and evergreen trees. We compared trees by considering their features e.g. deciduous trees usually have flat, bumpy leaves.

    Brilliant Computer Scientists

The children continued to debug simple instructions. They continued to learn positional language e.g. backwards, forwards, left and right.

  • Year Two Blog - 20th May

    Fri 20 May 2022

    Welcome to Year Two's blog

As it is that time of year, the children have been completing some of the statutory assessment tests (SATs) this week. We try to make these as much a part as normal school life as we can and downplay them. They serve to back up the ongoing assessments which take place throughout the year. This will be completed next week.

We will be sending information home soon about our exciting Year Two water sports trip at the end of next half term.

What we have been doing this week

In maths, we used balances and scales to measure and compare mass in grams and kilograms. We also measured and compared capacity in ml and litres. You can see the knowledge organiser here.

Out writing was based around 'House Held Up By Trees'. We looked at seed packets and wrote instructions for how to plant and grown them. We also recapped adverbs, conjunctions and wrote a newspaper report. We also began to generate some super technical and story language. You can read the topic sheet here

We continued our science topic on plants this week. This week we planned and carried out an investigation into how to help plants grow well, which we will continue next week. Read the science knowledge organiser here.

In geography the children learned the human features of India and created a poster of India's human and physical features. Read the geography knowledge organiser here.

In art the children planned and designed their clay sculptures of themselves in preparation for their final pieces.

What we are learning next week

In our last week of the half term we will be completing our SATs and finishing with our joint Jubilee Picnic at Upton Rec.

In maths we will be completing the maths SATs assessments and consolidating previous learning.

In literacy, the children will be completing their work on  'House Held Up By Trees' and they will be writing an estate agent's report to sell the house.

In science next week we will be checking how well the seeds have grown that we planted last week. We will be drawing conclusions from our investigation to work out what plants need to grow well. Read the science knowledge organiser here.

In geography next week, the children will look at India's weather and climate and make comparisons between the UK's weather and India's weather over different months of the year.  Read the geography knowledge organiser here.

In art next week, the children will be creating their final clay sculptures of human bodies using all of the techniques covered this term such as slip, score, blend and join.

It's been a short week, but a busy week!

What we have been doing this week

In maths the children continued to learn about time. We have been consolidating telling the time to 15 minute intervals and moving on to 5 minute intervals. You can read our knowledge organiser here.

In writing, the children used the story of 'The Dark' to write their own stories, but from the perspective of the dark. The children applied much of the knowledge they have been focusing on, including using adverbial phrases, possessive apostrophes and suffixes You can the topic sheet here.

We continued our science work on plants. The children will be looking at the different variety of seeds and bulbs and making careful observations. - Read the science knowledge organiser here.

In geography, the children located the physical and human features of the United Kingdom. - Read the geography knowledge organiser here.

In art, the children observed the human form, looking carefully and limbs and joints in preparation for creating their own clay models later in the half term.

What we are learning next week

In maths, we are going to spend two days completing our learning on time before moving on to measuring length. The children will be using rulers to measure accurately in cm and m, ordering and comparing lengths using <, > and =.
