Upton Infant School has created a scheme called Monster Maths to develop children's understanding and recall of key number facts, such as times tables and number bonds. All children have their own Monster Maths target to work towards, and these are stuck in their home / school reading diary.
Three afternoon sessions a week begin with brief, lively Monster Maths sessions. Once a week at the beginning of a maths lesson, children carry out a timed ‘Quick Quiz’ linked directly to their personal target.
When children have successfully achieved their target, they receive a sticker and a Monster key ring and are given a new target.
Each half term, a Mega Monster Maths day is held across the school. The focus of these days is linked to the current Monster Maths objective, but with a ‘Using and Applying’ aspect, that is, giving children the opportunity to develop maths skills in a real life context.
